Her granddaughter, Lena, stood beside her, her eyes bright with wonder. "Grandma, tell me about the early days."

Elena smiled. "We were scared. We didn't know if we could survive. But we believed in ourselves."

"And now?"

"Now we thrive."

The new ship, named the Hope, launched, carrying a crew of young explorers. They traveled to new galaxies, met new species, built new alliances.

"The universe is vast," Lena said. "But now, it is ours."

Elena watched the ship disappear into the stars.

"The future is bright," she whispered.

The stars watched in silence.

Jupiter was alive.

"Corporal Tanaka." Morrison stood before him, a piece of paper in his hand. "Congratulations. You've been promoted."

Michael stared. "Sir?"

"You've earned it. Leadership, combat performance, keeping your men alive. The Marines noticed." Morrison handed him the paper. "You're a non-commissioned officer now. Act like one."

Michael looked at the paper. Corporal. Him.

Okubo grinned beside him. "Corporal Tanaka. Sounds good."

Michael shook his head. "I don't feel like a corporal."

"You will." Morrison's voice was firm. "You've led men in combat. You've made decisions that kept them alive. That's what corporals do. The rank just makes it official."

That night, Michael wrote to Billy.

Billy,

They made me a corporal. Can you believe it? The kid from California who couldn't shoot straight in basic training is now leading men.

I don't know if I deserve it. But I'll try to live up to it. That's all I can do.
